Programming Skills and size of code [closed]

Programming Skills and size of code [closed]

Note:Question may sound subjective, but I would like to hear objective answers, hence I have asked questions in objective manner.
Hi, VLC is good (not the best yest) media player, which is being code by numerous programmers around the world, from past few years. Size of application is currently 22 MB. SPlayer and Daum Pot player are more than good media players. Size of this applications is around 7-8 MB, yet they are more powerful, customizable, and don't require any codec.
Take same case for Opera (small size 8-9 MB, fast and good browser) vs other browsers whose size range from 16-64 MB.
What I want to know is
1. Does VLC and other browser programmers are not good enough, to make small and efficient app.
2. How does knowledge of thing, which we are going to code, affects program. Eg. Who would program media app better, a person with good knowledge of audio-video codec but with limited knowledge of programming, or a good programmer but with limited knowledge of audio-video codecs.
3. What is factor, which makes app size small, but still making efficient, with considering above example.
4. How these people (Splayer, Daum Pot Player, Opera) have managed to produce a such a small size software, whose features are equivalent or sometimes superior when compared to other related softwares.
